4 Ways to Minimize High Heel Pain

You may not have been wearing them much over the last year, but high heels are sure to return into your life, whether it’s for work, fashion, or special occasions. But beware! High heels are tough on the feet, and from a podiatrist’s perspective, there are many ways that your feet are especially vulnerable to injury and pain:

Feet

Because the elevated heel pushes your weight forward onto the front part of your foot, that area is under excessive pressure. This constant strain can lead to a variety of issues, including bunionshammertoes, blisters, calluses and ingrown toenails. It can also affect the natural cushioning in your foot pad.

Joints

Wearing high heels can apply a lot of pressure to many joints in your feet and ankles, and all the way up your spine. Prolonged unnatural alignment of your joints can accelerate joint problems like arthritis.

Achilles tendon

Your achilles tendon is continually compressed, which can strain it and cause inflammation, pain, and stiffness.

Nerves

Sustained pressure on the balls of your feet can lead to nerve problems like neuromas.

Despite these damaging effects of high heels on your body, there’s little chance that they are going out of style. However, there are ways that you can prevent foot pain and minimize the effects:

  1. Choose low heels - every inch that you can lower counts! If you still want the height, platforms are another option.

  2. Wear them for short periods - Want to wear them for your dinner date after work? Bring your heels to change into later so you can wear comfortable footwear for the rest of your day. Limit the time you wear high heels to 3 hours or so - your feet will be much happier!

  3. Stretch and prep - Give your achilles tendon and calves a good stretch before and after wearing heels to lengthen them out.

  4. Choose heels with wide toe boxes - Pointed heels cause your toes to be squeezed together and can lead to issues like bunions. Choose a more wide toe box shape to accommodate space for your toes.
