What to Look for When Shoe Shopping

Looking to refresh your closet with new shoes for the spring and summer? As tempting as it is to choose based on looks alone, it’s important to keep these podiatry-recommended tips in mind as you shop! These are especially important for those with existing conditions like diabetes or bunions. Check them out!

Tip #1: Go shopping in person

In this day and age, shopping online can be super convenient, but when it comes to shoes, it’s important to actually try them on in person. Not only does that give you the opportunity to try multiple shoes if one doesn’t fit comfortably, but you can also feel the materials and flexibility of the shoe and get help from a specialist at the store.

Tip #2: Look for shoes with soles made with skid resistant material

Whether you want shoes for walking, working or heavy athletic activity, it’s important to look for materials that don’t cause slipping like rubber. That being said, try to avoid ones that have the rubber sole curling up towards the top of the shoes, as it can cause tripping.

Tip #3: Look for shock absorption in the right places

Everyone can benefit from shoes with great shock absorption, but if you are an athlete, make sure you get it in the places you need extra support like your heels.

Tip #4: Look for shoes made with flexible material

Your feet need to be able to move comfortably as you walk and do other activities, so look for shoes with flexible material that will move with you. If you have diabetes, it’s especially important to avoid friction in your shoes to prevent blisters and other wounds. Also, look at the construction of the shoe and make sure that there are no seams over areas that you experience pain (ex: bunion area).

Tip #5: If you want orthotic inserts, look for laced shoes

Custom orthotics are wonderful additions to shoes to enhance your foot function and comfort. Buying laced shoes will allow you to get a more secure fit to accommodate orthotics.
