What Are Bone Spurs?

When you think of bone conditions in the feet, you may think of fractures or deformities like bunions or hammertoes, but there is another condition that can result in a change in bone structure. Bone spurs are smooth growths on the ends of bones that can develop over time, most commonly as the result of osteoarthritis. Since they develop over time and are not easily diagnosed, our podiatrists at Precision Foot and Ankle Centers want you to know what signs to look out for.

Who’s at risk?

People who are 60 years or older and/or have arthritis are susceptible to bone spurs. These bony growths typically form on the joints of heels, big toes, or ankles. Osteoarthritis, a condition where the cartilage between joints break down, can lead to spurs as a result of the body attempting to repair the cartilage.

What are the symptoms?

Some people experience zero symptoms while others may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain

  • Stiffness

  • Swelling

  • Tendonitis (if near a tendon)

  • Decreased range of motion

  • Weakness

How is it treated?

After an assessment and diagnosis by a podiatrist through imaging tests like X-rays, CTs, or MRIs, recommended treatments may include:

  • Icing to reduce swelling

  • Custom orthotics to enhance comfort

  • Physical therapy to increase range of motion and reduce pain

  • Medication to reduce pain and swelling

  • Surgery to remove bone spur

The most important steps to take if you have bone spurs is to consult with a podiatrist to create a personalized treatment plan. If you’re at risk, staying physically active, protecting your joints, and wearing properly-fitted shoes can help prevent symptoms.
