Treating Arthritis Joint Pain

Did you know that you have 33 joints in each foot? It’s not surprising then, that when you develop inflammation in these joints, it can cause pain and greatly affect your mobility. This condition, known as arthritis, affects over 50 million Americans. Our podiatrists at Precision Foot and Ankle Centers want you to know about some common types of arthritis and how they can help treat them.

The most common types of arthritis:

Osteoarthritis is the most commonly known type of arthritis, which is sometimes called the “wear and tear arthritis.” It often affects the extremities, knees, ankles, hips, and even spine, gradually increasing in pain and stiffness as the cartilage between the bones deteriorates. This degenerative condition can make movement more difficult and painful, and lead to bone spurs as well.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that also results in joint pain. The body wrongly attacks normal joint tissues, which leads to inflammation, pain, swelling, fatigue, and weight loss. A person with rheumatoid arthritis can experience flare-ups as well as periods of remission when the inflammation dissipates.

Can you treat arthritis?

While arthritis does not have a cure, there are many ways to slow and manage symptoms. Podiatrists can help target and treat inflammation and pain that develops in the lower extremities through medication, physical therapy, custom orthotics, and surgical procedures. These treatments, combined with exercise and care from other healthcare professionals, can help ease discomfort.
