Choosing the Right Shoes for Neuropathy

Footwear is important for overall foot health, but it is especially important for those who have diabetes. Foot complications are extremely common for people with diabetes, including peripheral neuropathy, which is nerve damage in the extremities that can cause tingling, burning, and numbness. The inability to feel extreme temperatures, wetness, and injuries in your toes and feet poses a high risk for diabetics who are already prone to infections and slow healing. Therefore, in addition to regular visits to the podiatrist, wearing the right shoes can help prevent complications and discomfort associated with neuropathy.

What kind of shoes to look for

For people who have good foot health, sensation in their feet, and are maintaining their blood glucose levels, there may not be as high of a need to purchase specialty shoes. However, for those with significant nerve damage in their feet or who are prone to injuries, or experience pain or discomfort, it is important to look for diabetic or custom shoes.

These types of shoes:

  • have a wide toe box to avoid aggravating bunions and hammertoes

  • are made with flexible material like leather

  • provide extra support and cushioning for extra shock absorption

  • can be used with custom orthotics

Having a good pair of supportive shoes can be the difference between being able to walk comfortably and needing serious treatment for a complication. For those with neuropathy, being consistent and diligent about foot care, footwear, and regular podiatry visits are all important considerations.
