Are Insoles the Same as Orthotics?

Everyone has different feet with different needs. Some people can go their whole life without feeling much foot or ankle pain at all, while others need constant trips to the podiatrist to check up on issues. For a lot of these issues, we often prescribe custom orthotics to ease the pain. Many of our customers ask if they can use foam insoles or gels instead. While these products might help with some minor foot issues, custom orthotics are necessary to help people suffering from serious foot diseases or disorders. Read on to find out more.

First of all, what exactly is an orthotic?

Orthotics: Orthotics are inserts you can slip in your shoes that will help with a myriad of issues, like foot pain or flat feet. They can provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain, and they can also help to correct abnormal foot mechanics that are exacerbating your pain.

So what is the difference between custom orthotics and over-the-counter insoles?

  • Over-the-counter inserts: Over-the-counter inserts are available as gel insoles or foam inserts to help treat heel pain, foot pain, or other minor problems. They are typically a one-size-fits-all product and are not molded directly to your feet. There are a wide variety of types to help in different situations. For instance, gel insoles help provide relief from heel pain, while arch supports can be inserted in your shoes to help correct flat feet.

  • Custom prescription orthotics: These are typically prescribed for more serious foot issues or considered if over-the-counter inserts did not work for your issue. These are high-quality inserts that are custom-fit to your foot to alleviate your specific issue. Your podiatrist will evaluate your foot thoroughly to diagnose the nature of your pain. Then, a mold of your foot or a 3D digital scan helps to create the custom orthotic.

Here at Precision Foot and Ankle Centers, we use custom orthotics to help our patients with a wide range of issues like plantar fasciitis, severe foot pain, abnormal gait, foot deformities, and more. We also recommend them to some of our diabetic patients to help prevent and treat calluses or foot ulcers.
